Tips on Avoiding White Spots on the Smile During Your Orthodontic Journey

Posted .

If you’re about to align your smile with orthodontics, you’re on your way toward the smile of your dreams. You probably look forward to the day you can take your braces off and show off your smile. Well, you’re not alone there. Many people feel the same way. For the most beautiful smile possible, our orthodontist, Dr. Michael Jacobsen, recommends avoiding the development of white spots on your teeth during your orthodontic journey.

White spots form when the plaque on your teeth isn’t removed regularly. This is common because it’s tough to properly clean your teeth when you have braces. When the plaque isn’t removed, it removes the minerals from the tooth enamel and creates white spots. To help you prevent this, our orthodontic team has a couple tips for you.

First, remove the plaque regularly. You can do this by deeply cleaning your teeth. All you need to do is brush and floss often. In fact, it’s best to brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. If possible, brush and floss more. You also need to visit your dentist for a regular dental cleaning. This is necessary every six months.

Second, brush with fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride can help you because it can strengthen the tooth enamel, which makes it harder for the plaque to remove the minerals from your chompers. So, make sure to use fluoride toothpaste when you brush. You can also expose your teeth to fluoride by rinsing with fluoride mouthwash, drinking fluoridated water, and receiving a professional fluoride treatment at your dental office.
