Many patients come to Jacobsen & Maleeh Orthodontics with questions about their orthodontic appliances. Dr. Michael Jacobsen and our team are always happy to answer questions, address concerns, and provide reassurance. We invite you to read the following orthodontics FAQs to receive answers to your questions:

1. At what age should my child see an orthodontist?

By age seven, several adult teeth should have erupted, allowing us to evaluate your child’s dental development. The American Dental Association recommends bringing your child to an orthodontist at this point.

2. How do I schedule an appointment with an orthodontist?

Your family dentist may refer you or your child to an orthodontist, or you are welcome to contact our office. Our team would be happy to schedule an appointment for you.

3. What should I expect during an initial exam?

Upon arrival, our team will welcome you into our office and take routine photographs and X-rays. Dr. Michael Jacobsen will then perform a thorough exam for diagnosis.

4. Will I need to have teeth pulled?

A tooth extraction may be required to make room for the other teeth and increase the efficiency of your braces. However, due to advancements in orthodontics, pulling teeth is not always necessary.

5. How long will my treatment take?

The duration of treatment depends on your specific problem and the style of treatment you choose. Treatment can range from 12 to 30 months, averaging at 22 months.

6. How much will my treatment cost?

Cost varies from patient to patient, depending on individual needs. Our team will discuss cost and financing options during your initial visit. We will also review your insurance policy to help you maximize your benefits and file claims.

7. How often should I or my child visit the orthodontist?

Most patients are seen every five to 10 weeks. If your orthodontic work needs more frequent monitoring, our office will schedule appointments accordingly.

8. How do I brush and floss with braces?

We will provide a thorough demonstration on maintaining excellent oral hygiene, as well as recommend helpful oral treatments. To keep your braces clean, we strongly advise that you brush after every meal and before going to bed.

9. What are my options for braces?

Orthodontics has moved far beyond traditional metal brackets and wires. Jacobsen & Maleeh Orthodontics offers a variety of treatments, including Damon® braces, clear braces, and Invisalign®. We will gladly help you find the best treatment for your smile.

10. Can I get braces as an adult?

Orthodontics benefits all ages. In fact, 25% of orthodontic patients are adults. You are never too old to achieve the smile you deserve!
